Welcome to the 2013 Young Writers' Workshop!

This 18th annual community event for Scarsdale third to fifth graders will take place from 9:00am to noon on Saturday, March 16 at Scarsdale Middle School. We hope to inspire your children with the opportunity to experience “real life” writing activities, and help them appreciate the many ways they can be writers too.

The morning will begin with a keynote address by award-winning author Adam Gidwitz. His first novel, A Tale Dark and Grimm, is a New York Times Bestseller, and was named one of the best children’s books of the year by School Library Journal and Publishers Weekly. His second book, In a Glass Grimmly, was named a Best Book of the Year by Publishers Weekly, the New York Public Library, the Chicago Public Library, and School Library Journal. A sought-after speaker at schools, Gidwitz will teach two interactive “master workshops” following his keynote address.

Learn about all our workshops in our Workshop Guide. More than 40 top creative professionals from the New York area will be on hand to share their talents. This year, we’re proud to welcome an Emmy Award-winning producer, a Grammy-nominated composer, a presidential speechwriter, a congressional advisor, and numerous Scarsdale journalists, authors, educators and entrepreneurs. These experts will help students develop skills in a wide range of media, from writing for radio and television, song composition and public speaking, to criticism, story and character development and the art of the interview.

We’re also very pleased to partner with two local cultural organizations – Writopia Lab, a NYC-based creative writing program for kids and teens, with a new location in Hartsdale NY, and the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, NY is a nonprofit cultural arts center dedicated to: presenting the best of independent, documentary, and world cinema; promoting 21st century literacy; and making film a vibrant part of the community.

Register Now!

Please select five workshops, in order of preference, from the Workshop Guide. Your child will be placed in two of the five courses, but you must still make 5 selections. Please note that registration will run from January 22 through February 14. Those registering after February 14 will be charged a $10 late fee and are subject to workshop availability. Please note that registrations will not be accepted after February 26. All fees are nonrefundable.

You’ll be amazed at how much fun and learning this program packs into your child’s morning!

Donate Gently Used Books - For a Good Cause

Help us reach our goal of collecting 2013 books for elementary age children affected by Superstorm Sandy.  We hope to refill shelves of school libraries.  If each workshop participant donates four or five books they have enjoyed we can reach our goal this year!
